HealthyBaby Is The World’s First MyMicrobiome Certified Diaper

By The HealthyBaby Team

Big news for little ones: HealthyBaby, pioneer of the EWG VERIFIED® diaper, is now the world’s first MyMicrobiome Certified diaper brand!

You’re probably familiar with the gut microbiome. The skin, our largest organ, also has a microbiome, commonly called the skin barrier. This protective layer of healthy microbes (bacteria, fungi, and viruses) on the skin’s surface is critical to immune health and protects the body from toxins, pathogens, and pollution.

Baby’s skin microbiome is immature, vulnerable, and shaped by several factors, including their environment. Every interaction and exposure helps colonize baby’s skin microbiome, and the core microbiota of baby’s skin is established by age three. This is why safe essentials, from diapers to wipes to personal care, are so important.

“Safe” doesn’t mean sterile. The skin microbiome is a protective outer layer of good bacteria that we want to help baby cultivate. Overwashing and harsh antibacterial products damage baby’s skin microbiome, which can manifest in visible irritation and rashes or long-term health issues, like allergies, asthma, and immune challenges.

Keep reading to learn more about how Our Diaper and Our Pull-Up Style Diaper became MyMicrobiome Certified and what it means to be Microbiome-friendly.

What is MyMicrobiome?

MyMicrobiome is an independent scientific organization dedicated to advocacy and education about the skin microbiome and its connection to overall health. It works with cosmetic, textile, and other brands to test and certify their impact on skin microbiome health.

A product that is MyMicrobiome Certified or officially named Microbiome-friendly has been tested by MyMicrobiome repeatedly to verify that it supports the beneficial bacteria that comprise a healthy skin microbiome.

How did HealthyBaby diapers become MyMicrobiome Certified?

Our Diaper and Our Pull-Up Style Diaper are designed to start with the safest ingredients and materials, maximize absorbency without uncomfortable bulk, and keep baby dry. Absorbency isn’t just a matter of convenience for parents. A more absorbent diaper keeps baby’s sensitive skin drier and happier.

The parts of Our Diaper and Our Pull-Up Style Diaper that touch baby’s skin—the topsheet, leg cuffs, and back blowout protector—were tested in a lab by MyMicrobiome scientists. MyMicrobiome Certification was officially awarded in November 2025.

You might be wondering why this testing was done in-vitro (in a lab) vs. in-vivo (on a human or animal). We wanted to conduct a series of experiments in a controlled environment for the most accurate results. Testing measured if wet layers of our diaper chemically alter a normal skin microbiome. We were pleased to see that they don't.

What about other diaper brands that claim to support baby’s skin microbiome?

“Microbiome” has become a marketing buzzword in recent years. Various diaper and babycare brands advertise that they protect baby’s microbiome, but provide no scientific evidence for this claim.

As an EWG VERIFIED® diaper brand, HealthyBaby was confident in the safety of Our Diaper, but we worked with MyMicrobiome to verify with absolute certainty that the ingredients and materials within our diaper layers support a healthy skin microbiome.

Until HealthyBaby, no other diaper brand had been MyMicrobiome tested for its impact on baby’s skin microbiome. If history is any indicator, we expect other diaper brands to eventually follow our lead, as the skin microbiome is more widely understood.

What are other ways to support baby’s skin microbiome?

In short, foster a microbially-rich environment. Exposure to diverse microbes from plants, people, pets, and everyday life builds baby’s skin microbiome and strengthens their immune system.

Avoid overly harsh chemicals and cleaning agents in the products that go on baby’s body, your body (contact between you and baby is a key part of their skin microbiome development), and in your home.

If you’re looking for safe essentials, HealthyBaby has you covered, from diapers to wipes to skincare to home cleaning.
